THE WINTER COATS YOU’LL WEAR ALL SEASON

N O V 11, 2023

When it comes to investing in a new coat, these are the best styles to snap up now and wear for years to come
1. Shearling

A timeless staple with vintage appeal, a shearling jacket has a cool and understated look. The plush lining is designed for bracing the elements, while the fuzzy details balance directional leather pieces. Milanese label Halfboy’s cropped aviator style oozes contemporary cool – shrug it on over off-duty daytime denim, or dress it up with stiletto boots and a slinky slip dress after dark. Elsewhere, Utzon’s super-soft navy ‘Caprina’ coat and Nour Hammour’s tactile black version will work with everything in your wardrobe, while Toteme’s snow-white iteration is a refreshing shift from the status quo that elegantly pairs with tailoring. Alternatively, for a piece that can be worn from dawn to dusk, see Yves Salomon’s long-line double-breasted style: cut from plush olive-green shearling, it will keep you warm on an evening out. Style with leather pants and a second-skin top, or a bright mini dress and knee-high boots, depending on your mood.

2. The trench coat

Whether it’s made from cotton or wool (or features a practical water-resistant finish), the trench coat is an ideal winter option – guaranteed to be an on-rotation staple that elevates your everyday outfits. The roomy shape is suited for layering over chunky knitwear, while the belted waist can be tied loosely for a more relaxed look, or knotted for an hourglass silhouette. Trans-seasonal heroes can be found at The Row and Leset, with the latter’s wool-blend making it perfect on chillier days. Meanwhile, Burberry’s trench coat is fully reversible, so you can adjust it – plain dark green or full check – to match the mood.

3. The puffer coat

The winter puffer trend shows no signs of abating this season, so there’s never been a better time to invest in a padded piece to protect you from the cold. Insulated with pillow-soft padding and crafted from lightweight materials, quilted coats are both cool and cozy, whether you’re shopping in the city or enjoying a spot of après-ski on the slopes. Moncler and Shoreditch Ski Club both offer contemporary takes with city-ready silhouettes, while Ganni’s version – a NET-A-PORTER exclusive – is made from a lightweight recycled ripstop fabric with a contrast Peter Pan collar that’s perfect for chic country-weekend dressing. Alternatively, look to Mackage and Canada Goose for knee-length versions that are ideal for when the wind chill starts to bite.

4. The leather coat

Leather has really come into its own as an outerwear staple, and this season’s offerings go beyond the classic biker jacket. Elongated trench silhouettes tap into the mood of the moment, mixing practical polish with a cool, punkish feel for everyday wear. Nour Hammour offers an urban take on the button-up raincoat, while Citizens of Humanity’s ‘Orla’ leather blazer will look effortless shrugged on over relaxed tailoring and loose-cut denim – just be sure to keep it simple with a crisp white T-shirt. Meanwhile, Yves Salomon’s chocolate-brown style features a tonal shearling collar that will bring a touch of glamour to off-duty days; and Saint Laurent’s belted iteration has a vinyl-like finish, making it a refined choice for after dark.

5. The oversized coat

An oversized coat instantly refines an outfit. The structured shoulders and long length present casual confidence with minimal effort. For a foundational piece that retains its elegance into the evening, Saint Laurent and The Row offer back-to-school black versions that are ideal layered over everyday denims and accessorized with colorful scarves. Max Mara, meanwhile, offers a refined, double-breasted take in gray, which looks luxe layered over tailoring and with pointed boots. For colder days, the soft and fluffy texture of Ganni’s recycled wool-blend gray coat will keep you cozy, while Magda Butrym’s floor-length version in a chic taupe hue is a timeless classic; layer over a turtleneck in a popping shade to brighten up your daily look.

6. The statement coat

Cloudy days call for mood-boosting outerwear, and wearing a standout coat is an easy way to enliven a monochrome closet. Slip on Stella McCartney’s snake-print take for a decadent statement that’s kind to the planet, too. Indeed, created from recycled water bottles, this hero coat also forms part of our NET SUSTAIN collection of consciously crafted pieces. If you’re in a playful mood, see Acne Studios’ cow-print trench, which is a slick choice for the evening – and perfect with a mini dress. Elsewhere, Valentino Garavani’s lipstick-red overcoat is sure to brighten up even the grayest of winter days, while a powder-blue wool twill coat by Ami Paris will look cool paired with loose leather pants and a tonal turtleneck, whether you’re headed to brunch, a bar or beyond.

7. The belted coat

When the mercury drops, nothing feels as comforting as reaching for a wrap-around layer to trap in body heat. Ever since Max Mara’s now-cult classic was released in the 1980s, this cozy silhouette has become a mainstay in fall/winter closets and is now sartorial code for effortless city polish – indeed, it works just as well with jeans as it does with midi skirts and dresses. Anine Bing’s wool and cashmere-blend ‘Dylan’ coat is a cool, contemporary take on the traditional silhouette that will look smart at the office, while Loro Piana brings an artisanal feel with a leather-belted version that is crafted from a striped bouclé. Coveting the ultimate comfort piece? Saint Laurent’s floor-length mohair version is so elegant and cocooning, you’ll never want to take it off.
